Building pathways for the talent of the future

15 May 2023

Delivering extraordinary experiences and events for our clients is the heart of our mission at ICC Sydney, proudly managed by ASM Global. Our people are instrumental in building and maintaining this world class brand, and we’re thinking deeply about how we continue to invest in the future pathways and professionals of this rapidly evolving business events industry.

Partnering with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and TAFE NSW has opened doors for brilliant talent to develop their knowledge, skillsets and readiness for a career in our dynamic business events industry. We recently hosted the annual Careers Insights event on Thursday 20 April, attended by students from UTS’s event management school, who heard from ICC Sydney’s leaders, professionals and UTS alumni working at the venue on building long-term careers not just at ICC Sydney, but throughout the industry at large. These career pathways may include event services, culinary services, audio visual services, information technology, human resources, finance, business development, communications, and administration, amongst others.

Our relationship with TAFE NSW has seen hundreds of ICC Sydney team members, trainees and apprentices receive quality training from industry experts tailormade to meet our gold standard service benchmarks and expectations, like the Professional Growth Traineeship Program – granting participants a unique opportunity to work while studying in areas including audio visual, event management, business service, risk management, culinary and customer service. We are also proud to have developed pre-employment training programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, which has enabled participants to secure employment with ICC Sydney, along with cultural awareness and education training being delivered to employees. Fostering learning opportunities for up-and-coming professionals is integral to future-proofing our standard of event delivery, enabling emerging talent to build rich career journeys across our services.

We recognise that opportunities to grow and develop are important at every stage of one’s career, and we are excited to provide many different paths of advancement to our current team members. Since 1 January 2023, we have already promoted 30 people across the organisation. The power of acknowledging the meaningful work of our talent has only strengthened our ability to meet our client expectations, with their continuous passion and dedication raising the bar for innovation and reinvigorating our approach to event delivery.

Underpinning all our success is the diversity of our team. It is a privilege to be the host venue for such a diverse range of clients and events, and ICC Sydney’s strength is in the diverse backgrounds, knowledge, skills and perspectives our people bring in each day. We continue to aspire to be an employer of choice for First Nations people, people from migrant or refugee backgrounds, people of all genders and across five generations of age, people who may be parents and carers, people with physical or intellectual disabilities, essentially people across all walks of life. Valuing an inclusive workforce and enabling people to bring their full selves to work makes us better equipped as an organisation to understand our clients and execute events to the highest standard.

ICC Sydney is proactively thinking about the future, and how we can better empower our future talent and clients. Nurturing career pathways and journeys for the next generation of event professionals is a critical step in securing the health and success of the industry we all love.
